Excerpt from Story Board
Other times we were going to villages once a week. You knew some of the people there were possibly the enemy. But you would treat everyone equally – the idea was to win hearts and minds. The civil affairs program was one of the great things the Army did over there.
It was a dental-medical team, treating locals at the local square or market area.
We didn’t have an interpreter. You’d pick up a few words and patients just pointed to a sore tooth. We didn’t do fillings: we’d line up eight to ten people, inject them, and then the dentist would walk along and extract the teeth. People probably came from miles to get treatment.
