The forward scout was always out the front picking up information, keeping an eye out for the rest. If you weren’t switched on you weren’t going to be there. You’d sleep because your body needed to sleep, but you’d go back on picket. You learnt to cope with it.

I was laying in ambush one night. Then I could feel my cigarette pack going up and down, through the collar of my flak jacket and up through the sleeve, and there’s this snake head coming out! I just lay there till it got out and then I went mad with the machete. We had to move our ambush. They blamed me for stuffing it up.
